Originally from Canada, Nancy Argot has lived in northern Germany since 1997. Her award-winning poetry and short fiction have appeared in Canadian literary journals and anthologies since 1980.

From North America to Northern Germany
A Canadian sits at her table and writes … and writes … and writes …
Nancy Argot lives on the fringe. Somewhere on the outskirts. In Northern Germany. On the outskirts of the city of Hamburg? No. Outside Kiel, perhaps? Not there either. You’ll find her in the countryside, not far from the Baltic Sea, in a tiny village in Schleswig-Holstein. So far away from everything? What does she do there? She takes long walks across the fields. And when she’s not out walking or standing in a classroom teaching, you’ll find her at her table, writing. She paints, too, from time to time.
Born in Toronto and raised in the Atlantic region, Argot left Canada in 1996 with a grant for emerging writers from the prestigious Canada Council for the Arts. She travelled to Australia, taking four months of unpaid leave while her position at a university in Halifax, Nova Scotia, waited for her return. But she didn’t return. One year later, Argot found herself in Germany – a surprise turn of events would change the direction of her life.
Finding home
Nancy Argot has lived in Northern Germany, her adopted home, for 27 years now. “My ‘adopted home’? Did I choose this?” she asks with a hint of irony. “Oh, I love the landscape. It’s beautiful here, really beautiful! If you can make it through six months of grey, overcast skies, that is,” she adds with a wink. After several grants, numerous publications and the odd literary award (under her birth name; she recently took on the pen name Nancy Argot – pronounced AR-GO), she decided in 2020 to finally publish her work in book form.
“It was the start of the pandemic … we were all thinking about our lives then, weren’t we? What do I want? What shall I devote my precious time to? And if I get sick and die, what do I wish to leave behind?”
She began writing at an early age, publishing her first poems as an adolescent. Throughout her teens and into her twenties, Argot’s poetry and short fiction appeared in Canadian literary journals and anthologies. In 1997, she suddenly found herself in Germany. “I thought, okay, I might stay for a year.” Close to three decades later, she’s still here.
Moving in circles
Over the years, Argot has returned to Canada irregularly. Yet as she became more rooted in her life in Germany, her ties to the literary community in Canada gradually began to fade. Writing in English made it difficult to access such circles in Germany. Still, she continued to write, publishing sporadically and receiving the occasional grant.
“At times it was literature, other times therapy,” she says. Regardless of the situation, she wrote … and wrote … and wrote. With pen on paper. In the meantime, she’s filled thousands of sheets with her scribbles. Boxes full. “Writing is part of me, it always has been. Writing restores my inner balance.” But not just that. “Each new story presents its own special challenge,” says Argot. “With each new story, I test the limits of what a story can be. And I explore what it means to be human.”
Going public
In early 2024, Nancy Argot founded CYMBRIA BOOKS and with the help of graphic designer Stefan Guttke, she published her first eight volumes: poetry, short stories, two novellas and a novel. Her unique drawings accompany her writing, and her paintings grace several of the covers. “This all represents over thirty years of work,” she explains. Thirty years, most of which have been spent in Northern Germany. In the back of nowhere, where sun breaks through on cloudy days. “I like it here,” she smiles. “After twenty-seven years, it’s starting to feel like home.”
But her imagination takes her back to Canada … and America … and Australia … and numerous other lands – to unnamed towns and cities where her quirky characters take the stage. There’s almost always a twist, a surprise ending. “Like life itself,” Argot says thoughtfully. Her own life has been full of surprises. “And light. Yes, a little light is always shining somewhere.”

Von Nordamerika bis Norddeutschland
Eine Kanadierin schreibt … und schreibt … und schreibt …
Nancy Argot lebt etwas außerhalb. In Norddeutschland. Außerhalb der Großstadt Hamburg? Nein. Außerhalb von Kiel? Auch nicht. Man findet sie auf dem Land, unweit der Ostsee, in einem winzigen Dorf in Schleswig-Holstein. So weit weg von allem? Was macht sie dort? Sie geht spazieren. Und wenn sie nicht gerade über die Felder geht oder in einem Klassenraum steht und unterrichtet, findet man sie beim Schreiben. Malen tut sie auch, ab und an mal.
In Toronto geboren, aufgewachsen in der Atlantik-Region, verließ Argot Kanada im Jahr 1996 mit einem Schreibstipendium und reiste nach Australien: vier Monate unbezahlter Urlaub, während ihre Stelle an einer Uni in Halifax, Nova Scotia, auf sie wartete. Sie kehrte jedoch nicht zurück, sondern kam ein Jahr später in Deutschland an. Eine überraschende Wendung der Ereignisse sollte die Richtung ihres Lebens verändern.
Wahlheimat
Seit 27 Jahren lebt Nancy Argot nun in Norddeutschland, ihrer Wahlheimat. „Wahlheimat? Habe ich mir das ausgesucht?“ fragt sie mit einem Hauch Ironie und lächelt. „Ach, ich liebe die Landschaft. Hier ist es wunderschön, wirklich wunderschön! Wenn man sechs Monate grauen, bedeckten Himmel überstehen kann,“ zwinkert sie. Nach mehreren Stipendien, zahlreichen Veröffentlichungen und dem einen oder anderen Literaturpreis (unter ihrem Geburtsnamen; erst kürzlich nahm sie den Künstlernamen Nancy Argot – ausgesprochen AR-GO – an), entschied die Autorin im Jahr 2020, endlich ihre Werke in Buchform zu veröffentlichen.
„Es war zu Beginn der Pandemie … wir alle haben damals nachgedacht, nicht wahr? Was will ich? Wofür soll ich meine kostbare Zeit noch widmen? Und was, wenn ich krank werde und sterbe? Was möchte ich hinterlassen?“
Sie hatte schon früh mit dem Schreiben begonnen. Ihre ersten Gedichte wurden veröffentlicht, als sie gerade mal vierzehn Jahre alt war. Während ihrer Jugend und in ihren Zwanzigern erschienen Argots Gedichte und Kurzgeschichten in kanadischen Literaturzeitschriften und Anthologien. Mit Anfang dreißig fand sie sich plötzlich in Deutschland wieder. „Ich dachte, okay, vielleicht bleibe ich für ein Jahr, länger bestimmt nicht.“ Fast dreißig Jahre später lebt sie immer noch hier.
Hin und her
Im Laufe der Jahre kehrte Argot unregelmäßig nach Kanada zurück. Da sie sich mehr und mehr in ihr Leben in Deutschland vertiefte, schwächten sich ihre Verbindungen zu dortigen literarischen Gemeinschaften. Und da sie auf Englisch schrieb, war es nicht leicht, Zugang zu solchen Kreisen in Deutschland zu finden. Dennoch hielt sie nichts vom Schreiben ab. Sie schrieb weiter, veröffentlichte sporadisch und erhielt gelegentlich ein Stipendium.
„Manchmal war es für mich Literatur, manchmal war es Therapie“, erklärt sie. Ganz gleich, was geschah, sie schrieb … und schrieb … und schrieb. Mit Stift auf Papier. Mittlerweile hat sie Tausende von Seiten mit ihren Kritzeleien gefüllt. Kistenweise. „Es ist ein Teil von mir, das war es immer. Das Schreiben stellt mein inneres Gleichgewicht wieder her.“ Aber nicht nur das. „Jede Geschichte stellt ihre eigene besondere Herausforderung dar“, sagt Argot. „Mit jeder neuen Geschichte teste ich die Grenzen dessen, was eine Geschichte sein kann. Und ich erforsche, was es bedeutet, Mensch zu sein, in all seinen Facetten.“
In der Öffentlichkeit
Anfang 2024 gründete Nancy Argot CYMBRIA BOOKS und veröffentlichte mit der Hilfe des Grafikdesigners Stefan Guttke ihre ersten acht Bücher: Gedichte, Kurzgeschichten, zwei Novellen und einen Roman. Ihre einzigartigen Zeichnungen ergänzen ihre Schriften, ihre Gemälde zieren einige der Umschläge. „Hier sind über dreißig Jahre Arbeit vertreten,“ erklärt sie. Dreißig Jahre, von denen sie die meiste Zeit in Deutschland verbracht hat. In Norddeutschland. Irgendwo im Nirgendwo, wo die Sonne an grauen Tagen die Wolken durchbricht. „Ich mag es hier,“ lächelt die Autorin, „nach siebenundzwanzig Jahren beginnt es, sich wie Heimat anzufühlen.“
Aber ihre Fantasie führt sie zurück nach Kanada … und Amerika … und Australien … und in zahlreiche andere Länder, in unbenannte Städte und Dörfer, wo ihre skurrilen Charaktere die Bühne betreten. Es gibt fast immer eine Wendung, ein überraschendes Ende. „Wie im Leben selbst,“ nickt Argot nachdenklich. Auch ihr eigenes Leben war bisher voller Überraschungen. „Und Licht. Ja, irgendwo scheint immer ein kleines Licht.“
